This Class

I have learned a lot about the news. How things are written well, or written badly. Sadly, I've learned that journalism is not for me. I can never seem to catch my mistakes, or write without infusing my opinion. I have a brand-new respect for people who do this for a living. I think writing for the news is very confining and saps a person of creativity, having to juggle the endless barrage or arbitrary rules, but on the flip side, I see why those rules exist. For me though, not so good.

  1. I agree with you, I respect Journalists so much more now because of this class. It is so much pressure and work. I agree that it saps a person of creativity, every time I thought of something I thought was witty or clever I was docked points. I'm more into creative writing than critical writing!

  2. I also agree. I have a greater respect for journalism, but I'm not sure it's the profession for me either.

  4. Lucina - I would encourage you not to give up completely just yet. While I was in college, I actually felt the same way and enjoyed writing stories for magazines instead. However, I found myself gravitating towards newspapers, partially because it was easier to find a job in that business than magazines. I've come to appreciate the boundaries that there are in journalism. Once you figure out the "rules", you can bend them and even break them. There is still much crafting required in a news story, and room for creativity.
