1. Less than a year ago a woman, her mother, and her autistic sister were murdered by a man known to them in a house around the coroner from my employers residence. As I do home care, and have worked for my employer over a decade now, her home feels like my own. So when I picked up a Star Tribune that had an article mentioning (almost a year later) that this man is now serving 76 year in prison; I was happy that the article had found me. Knowing that three women laid dead for almost three days in such close proximity to my work was very disturbing.
2. One evening as I stood bored at my other job as a bouncer in Uptown, I started reading an article in the City Pages. The article mention that my favorite author, Augusten Burroughs would be giving a lecture about his newest book at the University of Minnesota. As a result of this article, I got to attend the talk, and actually meet him.
3. About a year ago in the Star Tribune there was an article about these people from Africa, I can't remember the exact country now, but it was a a country that had been in turmoil a decade ago. Many people from that region where able to come here on political asylum. Now that the region has a democratic government of sorts, the people are being told they will have to go back there. Many of these people have started families here, have careers, almost none of them wanted to go back. I was very saddened by this and felt compelled to appreciate my citizenship as an American as I never have before. I couldn't imagine how they could ask these people to leave here after more than a decade.

Wow! That first one is scary! I can't believe it was so close to you. Everybody always sees this sort of thing on the news or in the paper, and yet we still think it could never happen to us!
ReplyDeleteYour first story sounds like that murder in New Brighton. I remember reading about that, especially because I grew up near there. I graduated from Irondale high school which is in New Brighton.

ReplyDeleteMistakes:
• Should be employer's (with an apostrophe to show possession)
• Incorrect use of semicolon (should have just been a period)
• Run-on sentence should have been split in two (About a year ago in the Star Tribune there was an article about these people from Africa, I can't remember the exact country now, but it was a a country that had been in turmoil a decade ago.)
• Comma missed after Burroughs
The one you had about the people from Africa is very very sad. I am not sure how America could tell them they had to go back. That seems so unfair! :(
